Adult Outreach at Maitri
April 22nd, 2pm
Meet at MMSii, 1:30pm
Music brings people together, and at MMS, we believe in fostering a strong sense of community for our students. All of our students have the opportunity to perform for members of our local community that are in need, sick, aging, or lonely.
Our community outreach program serves two purposes:
To give our students more performance opportunities
To strengthen our community of musicians by giving back to our local community
MMS is proud to partner with 2 facilities right here at home in our own San Francisco neighborhood:
Maitri - at 401 Duboce Ave., is a hospice facility for HIV/AIDS patients and other underserved individuals. This is wonderful place, one of the last of its kind, serving the HIV & AIDS Community in San Francisco. Feel free to read this article to get a feel for Maitri and incredible service they are providing.
AgeSong, at 601 Laguna St., is an assisted living facility for the elderly. AgeSong’s philosophy is that Elders are an integral part of our society. They are sought out for their knowledge, life experience, and wisdom, and need to feel valued and to be accessible. AgeSong establishes and maintains eldercare communities where elders are understood as our teachers.
As often as we can, we take MMS students to perform at these facilities. Any students who are interested may join and play/sing one or more songs during the performance. Songs do not have to be memorized but should be solid and performance ready. We encourage parents and families to join as well, in order to support our students and also to spend time with the residents.
1. Community Outreach Coordinator - We are looking for a few people who are interested in taking on the task of coordinating with the point person at each facility, scheduling MMS performances, finding chaperones for the event, and leading the group to the facility from MMS. Ideally, performances could occur monthly, or more, if we have enough Coordinators involved.
2. Chaperones - For each AgeSong outing that includes children, we need 2-3 chaperones to help manage the group and keep an eye on everyone. This will allow parents who are unable to attend the performance to drop their children off for the event. Parents that are attending the event are welcome to volunteer to be chaperones for a single performance. Chaperones can coordinate with the Community Outreach Coordinator before each event for more details.
